Providing Support & Security in the Worst Times.
The biggest projects have often been disaster relief and rebuilding. Over the years the group has helped many families rebuild their lives and livelihoods. This includes Tsunami relief projects as well as several projects in response to the on-going issues of flooding around the island.
The 2004 Tsunami, in addition to claiming over 300,000 lives, also destroyed the homes of thousands of people. The Hirdaramani Group constructed 58 houses for 58 displaced families in the Hambantota area – providing them with the most valuable gift of all - a second chance.
Following heavy rains that lashed the Northern and Eastern parts of the country in early January 2011, causing severe flooding and deadly landslides, more than one million people were affected. The Hirdaramani Group handed out more than 4000 units of food, clothes and baby care products worth over 2.5 million rupees, to the Welikanda Army Camp and the Ministry of Disaster Management, to be distributed to the flood-affected families in the hard-hit areas of Eastern Sri Lanka. A team from Hirdaramani, representing each cluster, visited the area with the Army in Thoppigala to distribute some supplies and spend time with the affected families.
